NY TIMES BESTSELLER “CRYING IN H MART” MOVIE OPEN AUDITIONS FOR LEAD ROLE

The film adaptation of the New York Times bestseller “Crying in H Mart” is now looking for an actress to fill the lead role of “Michelle.”

Crying in H Mart is from the NY Times best seller of the same name by Oregon-raised musician and author Michelle Zauner. She and her upcoming production have released an open casting call / audition notice for her film adaptation of her bestselling memoir. The role up for grabs is the lead role and she is seeking an actress that can play herself in the movie.

The open casting call for the lead role is seeking an 18 to 25 year old Korean American. They are asking that Korean American actresses, or those that would like to audition submit a video of themselves which the describe as a “creative video introduction.” Michelle is a musician so the requirements also include being able to sing and play the guitar.

This project started in 2018 when The New Yorker published an essay, written by Michelle that she called, “Crying in H Mart.” Michelle is the singer for the band called Japanese Breakfast. Michelle Zauner went on to publish a memoir of the same name which covered her growing up in Eugene, Oregon with her mother battling cancer.

About the project: Crying in H Mart is an emotional experience that encapsulates the convergence of culture, nostalgia, and personal introspection. As one wanders through the aisles of this vibrant Asian supermarket, the familiar scents, vibrant colors, and intricate textures evoke a sense of home and belonging. Yet, amidst the joyous atmosphere, tears may unexpectedly well up, triggered by the weight of memories and the bittersweet longing for what once was. Crying in H Mart is a testament to the power of food as a conduit for healing and connection, allowing the tears to flow as a cathartic release, ultimately reminding us of the enduring importance of our roots and the depth of our emotional ties.
