Appropriation of indigenous design may be an ongoing issue, but these six talents are reclaiming their heritage through distinctive collections.
The line between inspiration and appropriation in fashion is oftentimes blurred. Nobody knows this better than the indigenous community, whose sacred prints, hand-burnished leatherwork, and beaded appliqués have been imitated by fashion houses for centuries. This type of cultural appropriation, where labels draw from deep-rooted design codes without crediting the culture they are taking them from, is particularly harmful to indigenous people, who have been, and continue to be, marginalized.

Checks and patterns, clashing textures and unexpected pops of colour breathe life into a woodland environment. Pops of vinyl clash with the natural scenery yet the models create a sense of harmony with nature through movements that channel trance and spiritual dance.
A case study from New York Fashion Week’s recent Fall/Winter 2018 presentations.

As the conversation becomes more widespread, however, a growing number of designers are stepping up to the plate, including a wider variety of ethnicities and gender identities in their shows. Recently, during New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2018, diversity was proudly on display from showcases by Willy Chavarria, CLOT, John Elliott, Coach and more.
