Location: Greenport, NY

Audition / Call Type: Theater
Auditions continue for The Tempest, by William Shakespeare, directed by Tony Tambasco.
Setting: an uncharted island in the Mediterranean Sea in the mid 16th century, which also happens to exist in the Long Island Sound in the present day.
Note for all auditioners: this play will NOT be performed with English accents. Please speak the lines in your natural voice for your audition.
Caliban, male, about 20, any race or ethnicity. Caliban is a half-human, half-fish demon ward of Prospero who is the island’s only human native. Caliban was initially kindly raised by Prospero, but after he attempted to rape Miranda, Prospero enslaved him as punishment, and Caliban resents the menial tasks and punishments he is subjected to, longing to escape his torments and labors, and to revenge himself on Prospero. Caliban is a riotous boy who struggles with the worst instincts of his own nature, and ultimately determines to overcome them.
Miranda, female, about 15, any race or ethnicity. Prospero’s only child, life on the island is just about all she knows, but she knows every nook and cranny of the island, and has received a thorough education from her father. Naturally inquisitive and kind-hearted, Miranda is wonderstruck at the new world of people that have come to the island, and discovers she longs to know the world beyond.
Ariel, any gender, any age, any race or ethnicity. Skilled with a portable musical instrument they can play while speaking (guitar, mandolin, banjo, &c), and also ideally with a wind or reed instrument (recorder, flute, clarinet, &c), and a singer. Ariel is bound to serve Prospero for a time, but longs for freedom, although unlike Caliban, Ariel does Prospero’s bidding without resentment. Ariel is a spirit of air and water, and experiences the world differently than the human characters in the world, but needs to move freely like the winds and waves. Ariel can change shape (somewhat) freely, and appears as both male and female at different points in the play.
Ferdinand, male, about 16 – 20, any race or ethnicity. Alonso’s son, and rightful heir to Naples. After being shipwrecked on the island, he falls in love at first sight with Miranda, and will do whatever it takes to be near to her. Ferdinand is in awe of the wonders he discovers on the island, and discovering how little he understood the world previously, embraces these mysteries.
Adrian, any gender, age 20 – 40, any race or ethnicity. One of Alonso’s faithful lords who attended the wedding of his daughter, and who washed up on the island in Alonso’s company. If cast with a female-identifying actor, the character will be re-gendered to Adriana.
Francisco, any gender, age 20 – 40, any race or ethnicity. One of Alonso’s faithful lords who attended the wedding of his daughter, and who washed up on the island in Alonso’s company. If cast with a female-identifying actor, the character will be re-gendered to Francisca.
Juno, female, any age, any race or ethnicity. The ancient Roman goddess of marriage and motherhood. Juno is a featured singer in Prospero’s magical masquerade.
Ceres, female, any age, any race or ethnicity. The ancient Roman goddess of the harvest. Ceres is a featured singer in Prospero’s magical masquerade.
* All members of the cast noted above may be doubled with various sailors, attendants, or spirits in the play.
Other Ensemble members, any gender, age, race or ethnicity. Actor / singer / dancers who will play various sailors, attendants, and spirits in the play. Ensemble members will be the primary performers of any preshow entertainments, and those with special performance skills (magic, juggling, &c) are especially welcome.
