After the success of the online rehearsed reading of ‘London Zoo’ in February, with a run going ahead in September at the Bread and Roses Theatre, Farine Clarke has another play we need a cast for another online reading! Have a look through these parts and if any of them suit you please send an email with the subject line ‘Story of Friends’ and the character you want to be submitted for.
Submissions close 5pm Friday 5th March with auditions taking place week beginning 8th March. Auditions, rehearsals and the performance will all be on Zoom so you can be based anywhere. We just ask that you have a good internet connection and good availability end of March / beginning of April but we aim to be flexible with rehearsals.
Find all character descriptions below, many of the characters will also be multi-roling other roles which aren’t on this cast list. Please share with anyone you think would be suitable.
ALEXANDRA BLAKE
Female Identifying, Aged 35-40 / Accent: Any
Key characteristics: brave, intelligent, apparently self-
assured. A consultant obstetric surgeon. A highly intelligent woman who makes tough decisions in her work every day and eventually takes the bravest personal decision. Dedicated and hard-working. Not seen as weak at all and yet she becomes a victim in her own marriage before committing the ultimate self-sacrifice.
ALAN
Male Identifying / Aged 43-50 / Accent: RP
Key characteristics: warm, friendly, thoughtful, intelligent, insightful, and loyal. Brave Managing director/owner of a successful business. Charles’ schoolboy friend, he understands the pain Charles is going through and remains loyal to the point of transferring the pain to himself to save.
CHARLES
Male Identifying / Charles Aged 43-50
Key characteristics: clever and outwardly fine, but pained, irritable, depressed, stressed, unhappy. Appearances very important but in terms of ‘societal correctness’ rather than to impress others. Successful lawyer at the same firm a Harry (but
more senior), Elena’s husband and a very close friend of Alan’s on whom he’s relied since their shared time at a boys’ boarding school decades ago. Has an affair with Elizabeth and struggling to keep up appearances that he is happily married to Elena.
HARRY
Male Identifying / Aged 30-35
Key characteristics: intelligent, humorous, straightforward, reliable. A partner at Charles law firm.
ELENA
Female Identifying / Aged 38-45.
Key characteristics: Fake! Self-conscious. Jealous, has Inner steel but also fragile, while outwardly is “falsely warm. Secret drinker. Married to Charles. Considers herself a socialite. Her need to keep up appearances which dominates her behaviour also masks her deep emotional intelligence which is only revealed briefly towards the end of the play.
